Ballad of a night back in my youth
A scary one to tell the truth
A night that could have altered all our lives.
There was a melted tennis shoe
About a dozen girls we knew
Skinny dipping, too much beer, and telling lies.
It could have all ended that day
But God in Heaven saw another way
As he held us in his palm
Although we laughed to cover up
The fact that we were pretty shaken up
But in that one moment there was perfect calm
Chorus
The midnight sky was bright as day
So surreal that it could be that way.
As we watched as our lives flash
Things were spinning in slow motion
And I had the distinct notion
One wrong move and life would pass.
Was it Jesus at the wheel?
In the moment life was so unreal
The feeling was bizarre.
There was no over correction
And I felt such a strange connection
As the angels held my car.
V2.
The girls had stopped up on the dam
While we gave the melting shoe a full exam
When we looked up couldn’t believe our eyes
Steering skids guard rail to guard rail
Didn’t look like it would end well
Nothing but rocks and water on both sides.
We finally skidded to a stop
And we’d managed to stay on top
Like a bull rider on a violent ride
We thank our lucky stars
That we can still tell this story of ours
The night our angels saved our lives.
Chorus
The midnight sky was bright as day
So surreal that it could be that way.
As we watched as our lives flash
Things were spinning in slow motion
And I had the distinct notion
One wrong move and life would pass.
Was it Jesus at the wheel?
In the moment life was so unreal
The feeling was bizarre.
There was no over correction
And I felt such a strange connection
As the angels held my car
